My Crib Choice

I'm back and I'm sharing my crib choice.  It was one of my first big decisions when I found out that I was pregnant.  With that being said, it took me quite a while to pull the trigger because I had a pretty long list of musts-haves and would-likes.  Overall, I was aiming for high quality versus high style.  This wasn't an area that I was willing to compromise if at all possible.  My baby-to-be was going to spend a lot time in the crib (hopefully 8+ hour stretches...) and I wanted it to last through moves to new homes, into toddler years and even for future family members.

Here's my list:

  • Relatively small - You know by now that I live in an small, one bedroom, NYC apartment.  The crib was going to (and now is) sharing the minimal square footage of the one bedroom.  I didn't want a true mini crib because I intended to use it in the future, in bigger spaces and with younger siblings.  Rather, I wanted a standard size crib that would fit a standard size mattress, but otherwise small (minimal thickness and height).  Some cribs are pretty bulky.  I wanted to steer clear of those cribs, however gorgeous they might be.
  • Made of wood - Wood is better than pressed board (aka MDF) for a couple reasons.  First, it lasts longer.  Second, it's natural.  Pressed board contains some gnarly chemicals and while I wasn't going to be obsessive about off-gassing concerns (Google it), choosing a wood crib versus a non-wood crib seemed easy enough.
  • Non-toxic finish - There are so many cribs with non-toxic finishes nowadays that it was simple to go with the safer option.
  • Light finish - This was purely aesthetic, but I preferred a light finish (white, birch, etc.) versus a dark finish (cherry, expresso, etc.).  I work with the theory that light and bright colors help open up small spaces.
  • Simple style - I'm not into ornate things, cribs included.
  • No drawers on bottom - At first I absolutely, positively wanted drawers on the bottom of the crib.  I figured the added storage was what every one bedroom apartment with a newborn needs.  But I changed my mind.  I realized that an open bottom crib gave me options.  I could use the open space for more versatile storage like baskets or plastic bins.  Or, I could just leave it open for storing playmats and other randomly shaped baby stuff.
  • Convertible into a toddler bed - Stretching the usability of the crib just made sense to me, especially because I wanted to purchase a high quality crib that I believed would last into (and beyond) toddler years.

And now my choice - the Robin crib by Oeuf

What you see above is what you see in my bedroom, with the exception of the toddler doing yoga and the funky shaped cow rug.  So far, so good.  I'm very pleased with my choice.  It met ALL of my must-haves and even my would-likes.  I didn't have to compromise on a single thing.  The price point seemed mid range ($499 without the toddler bed conversion kit) compared to other models I was considering.  I had looked at everything from cribs available on Walmart.com to the Stokke Sleepi crib.  I really liked a crib by Argington (here), but was ultimately dissuaded after reading a number of reviews about faulty legs that snapped and broke.  The Robin crib was the right crib for the right price and I happened to love the way it looked, bonus.

How did you choose a crib?  What did you ultimately settle on?

A Diaper Quagmire

Something that a non-mother would never think about - diapers.  In fact, most non-mothers specifically avoid diaper interactions.  Diarrhea and warm urine aren't typically handled by choice.  But when your next stop is having a baby, it's time to suck it up and get down to (dirty) diapers because there are options.  You didn't realize there were diaper options?  There are.

DISPOSABLE DIAPERS

First up are the modern, plastic, throw out diapers.  These are the diapers you see in television commercials (i.e. Huggies, Pampers).  There are a couple unique pros:

  • Easy and Convenient.  Fans of reusable and hybrid diapers will argue that they're just as easy.  As an outsider to reusable diaper changing (and diaper changing in general), I'm gonna disagree.  To me, a disposable diaper is easier because when it's dirty you chuck it in the diaper pail and don't look back.
  • Bells and whistles.  Some disposable diapers have "wetness indicators" and sweet fragrances to mask the not so sweet fragrances.
Huggies disposable diapers

REUSABLE DIAPERS

Next are the old-school and coming back in a big way reusable diapers.  They are what they sound like - diapers that are reused after each use.  There are couple unique pros:

  • Cost.  In a diaper to diaper comparison, disposables are much cheaper than reusable/hybrids.  But, in the long term a baby will need more and more and MORE disposables where as reusable diapers can be reused, thus they're a one-time expense.  And reusable diapers can be passed along to additional siblings.
  • Natural material.  Reusable diapers are made of natural materials, cotton or wool, which is a huge bonus for babies with especially sensitive skin.
Charlie Banana reusable diapers

Before I discuss the 3rd type of diapers, it's important to address the environmental impact disposable and reusable diapers because it's a bit of a quagmire (side note: quagmire is one of my favorite words and it's the name of a character in Family Guy).  I'm guessing you're confused.  You thought that the key difference between reusable and disposable diapers are that the former is less harsh on the environment and the latter is more harsh on the environment.  Well, it turns out that it's not quite that cut and dry.

The major issue with disposable diapers is that they don't decompose.  They sit in landfills far beyond the lifetime of the baby and when a single baby is using a couple thousand disposable diapers from birth to potty training...that's a lot of diapers.  Supposedly there are some new disposable diapers that decompose in 10-15 years, which is an interesting solution.  But I feel compelled to use the word "supposedly" because there haven't been 10-15 year long studies to prove this claim.  Meanwhile, reusable diapers don't hang out in landfills because they're busy being reused.  And when a reusable diaper finally meets its maker, it will eventually decompose because it's made of natural fibers.  That's the good news.  But, reusable diapers do impact the environment with the water and energy consumption that it takes to clean them.  For those using a laundry service there is the additional impact of the vehicle (gas, emissions, etc.) that picks up and drops off the diapers.

HYBRID DIAPERS

Finally, the third option.  Hybrid diapers are part reusable and part disposable.  The diaper itself can be washed and reused, but there is a disposable insert.  With some brands the disposable inserts are thrown away and with some brands the disposable inserts can be flushed down the toilet.  Could these be the answer to the disposable/reusable quagmire?  I'm not sure.  These are a relatively new option, so I couldn't find comparison studies regarding the environmental impact.

Diaper buyers and changers - what option did you choose and why?  Would you make the same choice all over again after your experience?  Any other pros that I missed?

Tree Inspired Nursery

I've pulled together some ideas for a tree themed nursery.  I know, TREE themed?  I started with the more general idea of nature themed, but I kept finding tree items that I loved.  The natural colors are good for a boy or a girl and the overall feel is mature even though these are baby products.

1. Tree of Life crib bedding by Poids Plume ($425)
2. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein ($12 on Amazon.com)
3. Organic wood tree teether by A Summer Afternoon ($12)
4. 3-D Personalized Tree Art by Domestic Notions ($64.80)
5. Lumbar tree pillow by Classic by Nature ($30)

Something's Fishy With This Nursery

Enough with all the owls.  Yes, everyone loves them.  Everyone wants to have owl themed baby showers and owl themed nurseries and owl themed lives.  They're great, but let's not leave out the rest of the animal kingdom.  Today, it's all about the fishies.  I recognize that fish aren't the cutest or cuddliest of creatures.  Perhaps lions or sheep would have been a more logical choice to follow the trendy owl?  Oh well.  I went with fish and I am so smitten with each of these lovely products.

1. Fresh fish pillow by Mimi Kirchner ($75)
2. Red carp screen printed mini pillow by minimonos ($33)
3. Goldfish pillow by Little Korboose ($25)

This fantastic light switch ($12) cover is made by Turn Me On Art (ha!).  These are trout, yes?  Mixing realistic fish decor with whimsical and cartoonish fish decor is great for creating a cohesive feel without the matchy matchy effect.

This wooden teether ($12) by Little Sapling Toys is eco-friendly (naturally anti-bacterial, non-allergenic, and non-toxic) .  When it's not drool covered and in use, it would be a perfect bit of art for the bookshelf.  Enjoy a 10% discount on your purchase with the coupon code "NEXTSTOP10" (valid between 9/19/11 and 10/10/11).

Wooden Nursery Treasures

All of these delightful treats have (at least) one thing in common - they're made of wood.  The appeal of these products for me, other than the fact that they are unique and beautiful, is that they are gender neutral.  Each item would be great in a baby girl or baby boy's nursery.  And wood, as a material, has a mature character that could easily transition a space from a nursery to a bedroom.

Check out these vintage children's chairs from Old New House.  Before your little one figures out how to sit upright, they could function as shelves for books or bags or a resting spot for an over-sized stuffed animal.

This alligator peg rack by Maple Shade Kids is colorful and playful in all the right ways.  The details are eco-friendly: non-toxic paint, non-toxic glue and a soy-based sealer.  Use the coupon code "NextStopBaby" to receive 15% off your entire purchase (excluding shipping).

This bookend by Graphic Spaces has a modern flare for a bookshelf full of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein. There are tons of designs (fox, bunny, etc.) but the bird family is my favorite.

Winnie the Pooh Baby Shower, T-t-t-ttttterrific

Last week I told you about my childhood (and adulthood) love of Winnie the Pooh in my post on Things You Must Have a Baby To Do.  This week, I'm continuing my tribute to the Disney classic with ideas on hosting a Pooh Bear themed baby shower.  It's naturally a gender neutral choice and the predominant colors of honey yellow and sage green emphasize this.

The Invitations

I love the vintage look of this invitation by Shutterbug Sentiments.  It's a digital file, so you buy the image and print as many invitations as you need.

The Menu

Drinks - Hot tea, just like Christopher Robin served Pooh and friends, with all kinds of flavor choices.  For the summer, try lemonade and iced tea.  Click HERE for a super simple Apple and Honey Iced Tea recipe from epicurious.com.

Food - Honey, haycorns and thistles would be ideal, but being that the latter two are figments of Christopher Robin's imagination, stick with honey.  Check out all the delicious honey foods below.

Here's an idea for an inexpensive and fitting centerpiece: a hurricane/vase full of acorns. Of course living near an Oak tree (in the fall) would make this DIY project sure thing, but if that's not the case go to the Acorno Wedding Guide website to buy yourself some acorns by the pound.

The burlap material used to make these flags by Celebrate With Fun has a natural, woodsy feel that will work perfectly with the Pooh bear theme.  The words can be customized to read "Sweet Treats" (hang it above the refreshment table) or "Baby Last Name" or "Congratulations Mom-to-be-Name."

Nursery Rhyme Baby Shower, Hey Diddle Diddle

What's more baby quintessential than nursery rhymes?  I was inspired to pull together ideas for a nursery rhyme baby shower when I saw the invitations below (by olive + STAR).  I just loved their simple, yet playful vibe - which can be said of this theme in general.  It resonates a wonderful feeling of old and new - timelessness.

The Invitation

These invitations by olive + STAR are modern and whimsical.  The cow jumping over the moon is perfect for a boy, girl or surprise baby shower.  The mary janes (one two buckle my shoe) are certainly feminine, but olive + STAR works with customers to create original designs - so don't be afraid to ask for a more masculine take (boots would be adorable!).  Mention "Next Stop Baby" in your purchase comment and you will get free shipping.

This sweet invitation by Down-to-Earth Paperworks includes bits of many nursery rhymes in a personalized poem.  The sample below uses rose pink paper, but the color can (of course) be customized.  As the shop name suggests, eco-friendliness is incorporated whenever possible.  If you mention Next Stop Baby in your order comment you will receive free shipping!

The Menu

Something about nursery rhymes reminds me of barns and farms.  You too?  I think this is because nursery rhymes so often include farm animals.  I'm not sure why, but my guess would be that farming was the only way of life when most nursery rhymes were written.  With all this in mind, here is my menu vision:

Drink - Lemonade sweet tea (check out this recipe from Elizabeth Ann's Recipe Box), regular old iced tea, apple cider (cold, warm, mulled or spiked), punch (with or without champagne) and ice water in pitchers garnished with lemon and lime slices are all refreshing choices.

Food - PIES!!!  Rather than serve a whole mish mosh of food and dessert, how about just pies?  Pies are a perfectly down home treat that everyone will enjoy and there are so many choices: apple, blueberry, cherry, lemon meringue, pumpkin.  You can get creative and make your own chocolate pudding pie (like the gorgeous one below by The Smitten Kitchen) or you can head to your local bakery and pick its specialities.

via The Smitten Kitchen

The Decorations

Continuing with the farm/barn look, here are some basic and inexpensive ideas to pull the theme together.  Also, don't forget baskets - to display the napkins and as a vase for your sunflowers - they scream country and you can probably find a few lying around your house.

A red checked tablecloth is ideal.  Amazon.com of course offers every variety that you can think of: cotton gingham (like below), vinyl and plastic disposable (for 59 cents!).

via Amazon.com

Huge, ceiling high sunflowers might not be an option for your indoor space (go for it if they are or if the baby shower is outside), so cloth or paper sunflowers are a great alternative.  The sunflowers below are made from a sunflower kit by Paper Source, which is fool proof for the slightly less crafty individual.
via Paper-Source.com

Made by N.V. makes these farm animal cupcake toppers.  How cute? How perfect?  If your theme is more particular (Little Bo Peep or Three Little Pigs or Cow Jumped Over the Moon), then you can make your order more particular (sheep or pigs or cows).  Use the coupon code SHIP4FREE to receive free shipping on your order.

The Favors

The little envelopes below are filled with flower seeds for your guests to take home and grow a garden.   SuLu Gifts makes these unique gifts and is offering NSB readers a 10% discount with the coupon code BABY10.

The Fabled Needle makes this 4" x 6" notebook, which would be an awesome prize for a baby shower game - a practical and beautiful and themed gift (four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, remember that one?).  Enjoy 20% off your purchase with the coupon code "blackbird" through May 31, 2011.
